How the Narrator works

The dice are honest.
So is this page.

Markbound uses AI for narration, story suggestions and memory. Game mechanics determine dice outcomes. This page explains the models we use and what information is sent.

The one promise

The AI never decides what happens in your saga. It only describes what your dice, your oracles and your choices already decided.

The Narrator's job

What it does — and what it never touches

Think of the AI as a writer sitting beside you, not a referee. It turns the table's results into story — it doesn't get a vote on them.

What the Narrator does

Writes the prose of each scene from your sheet, your dice and your journal.
Keeps the story coherent across sessions by reading recent entries.
Responds to the action or message you choose — and waits for your next move.

What the Narrator never does

Roll dice — every roll is crypto-grade randomness, in your browser.
Draw oracles — those are plain table lookups on your device.
Silently change your sheet, vows, momentum or tracks — every change is one you can see in the journal.

Your data

What an AI request contains

Each time you ask for a Narrator turn, we send relevant story context. Summaries and continuity updates can also accompany that request. Do not put private information about yourself or other people in story fields: text you enter there can reach the model.

Sent for each turn

The instructions that define the Narrator's role and limits.
A condensed slice of your sheet — stats, conditions, vows, assets.
A recent slice of your journal, so the story stays coherent.
The Living Codex and narrator memory needed for continuity, including known NPCs, locations, consequences, clues and inferred play-style signals.
The dice and oracle results the Narrator has to respect.
Your latest message or chosen action.

Kept out of the prompt

Login credentials and payment records are not deliberately included.
Account permissions restrict access to your own game records.
Personal information typed into a journal or message is still story input and can be sent.

Using the Narrator

Your story data

We do not train models ourselves or sell story content. Narration uses Moonshot's Kimi API; our privacy policy explains provider processing and the pending agreement request.

It's fiction, not facts

Narrator output is a story. It can be wrong, contradictory or odd. Treat it as a creative collaborator, never as factual advice.

The AI is opt-in, always

Dice, oracles, your sheet and the journal work with no AI in the loop. You call the Narrator only when you want to.

Under the hood

Which models we use

The Narrator uses Kimi K3 through Moonshot AI's direct API. Saga checkpoint summaries also use Kimi K3. Helper tasks, such as entity extraction, use Kimi K2.6.

Relevant story context is sent to Moonshot to generate these responses. We have requested a business agreement from Kimi, and the applicable data-processing terms and additional privacy protections for our account are awaiting confirmation. Read our privacy policy for the current training, retention and transfer caveats. Please keep sensitive personal information out of story fields.

EU AI Act — Article 50

Transparency, stated for the record

The EU AI Act's transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. Markbound is a creative-writing tool, not a high-risk system, but the disclosure duties are simple and we meet them plainly:

You are interacting with an AI system. The Narrator is a large language model, never a human game master, and it is labelled as such wherever it writes.
Narration is AI-generated content. Every Narrator turn in your journal — and in any export — is machine-generated fiction, not a factual record and not human-authored text.
No emotion recognition or biometrics. We do not use AI outputs to decide eligibility, pricing, account access, legal status or similarly material matters.
No deepfakes of real people. The Narrator writes original fiction about your characters; it does not generate audio, video, or imagery depicting real persons.
Human oversight is yours. The AI can be switched off entirely — dice, oracles, sheet, journal and export all work without it — and every rules outcome is decided by your dice, not the model.
